Transforming Payment
Collection for Field Service
Link — A Mobile-First Payment Collection App for Enterprises & SMBs
Overview
Reimagining Invoice-to-Payment in One Mobile Experience
Collecting payments from customers has long been a bottleneck for field service businesses — from technicians to home service providers to small retailers. Invoices go unpaid for weeks, cash flow suffers, and DSO (Days Sales Outstanding) stretches uncontrollably. Link brings invoice-to-payment into a single, mobile-first experience, designed to accelerate cash flow, reduce collection friction, and delight both field workers and customers.
43% of invoices take 30+ days to collect. Our target: reduce to 7 days via on-site payment collection.
The Problem
A Fragmented, Broken Collection Experience
Field service businesses face a fragmented payment experience: workers complete jobs on-site, mail invoices days later, and chase customers for weeks to collect. By then, transaction context is lost, customer goodwill has faded, and accounts payable teams are drowning in follow-ups.
Manually chasing invoices kills productivity — 6+ hours per week per technician
Workers juggle multiple apps and can't accept diverse payment methods on-site
Invoices arrive long after service, leading to disputes, chargebacks, and lost context
User Research
What We Discovered in the Field
Field technicians spend 6+ hours per week chasing unpaid invoices — time better spent on service delivery
78% of customers prefer paying immediately after service completion, not weeks later
SMB owners cite payment collection as their second biggest pain point after scheduling
A unified app for quoting, invoicing & collection could save 8+ hours per week per technician
Design Strategy
Three Personas, One Unified Flow
Field Technician
Needs speed and simplicity. Job done → paid in 2-3 taps, without switching apps or losing connectivity.
SMB Owner
Needs visibility into collections and cash flow. Real-time dashboard with pending alerts and reconciliation summary.
Finance / Accounting
Needs automated reconciliation and reporting. AI-powered discrepancy detection replaces 3+ hours of daily manual matching.

Design Iterations & Learning
How We Got There
On-Site Payment Friction
Initially, customers manually entered card details on a small screen. User testing revealed 22% abandonment at this step. We pivoted to QR code + native payment sheet — customer scans QR on their own phone, enters card details in their bank's trusted interface. Completion rate jumped to 89%.
Offline Functionality
Field workers in rural/remote areas faced connectivity drops mid-transaction. We redesigned to queue payments locally, encrypt securely, and sync when online. This single feature reduced payment failures by 41% in areas with spotty connectivity.
Finance Team Reconciliation
Accounting teams initially spent 3+ hours daily matching payments to invoices across different gateways. We built auto-reconciliation with AI-powered discrepancy detection. Finance teams now catch issues in minutes instead of hours.
